I have two roasting pans, one from the 70's that we acquired from a house we bought from the previous owner who died and left it behind. And, one I just bought recently from good ol' Walmart. And, you know what? They look the same other than the slight variation in blue color. But, they have the same speckled white stuff and the same "leaf" imprint on the bottom.
My question is....is there a purpose to the speckled stuff and "leaf" imprint, that they have to have it on every roasting pan I see? If you can solve this mystery, I will be eternally grateful. :P
Ahh....the difficult questions in life..... ;)

They do it so you would ask questions. It apparently works.
Deep thoughts.... I am a deep thinker, ya know? ;)
Don't know what the speckles are for, but the pattern is for collecting meat juice run-off for basting and such. :D (I think it's funny that the vegan told you this) LOL
But I'm just twisted that way!
But, the pattern is sooooo shallow, that I couldn't imagine it being useful. You sure about this fact? I challenge you to show me this fact! :P
I would suggest getting an (800) number for the manufacturer and calling them. After all, they should know about their products.
Hey, that's a good idea! I might do that...really curioius....
Shallow? Like just a design imprint or something? Hmm...
My roasting pan has really deep ridges and thats what I was told they were for years ago.
But then again...it could have just been another "Pot Roast Story".

That there parable is funny! I read it before and remember laughing.
Reminds me of this story:

Now there's definitely a grain of truth in that! You wouldn't believe how many times the answer to one of my "why?" questions is "well, that's just how we've always done it".
I think the speckles are for decoration, but I could be wrong, since I just buy the aluminum roasting pan from the store. that way cleaning up is easier....just trash the whole thing.
Annie, love the pot roast story! :D Yes, and the imprint is extremely shallow.
Boy, now I gotta solve this deep mystery! ;)
